Monterey County Unemployment Higher than State/National Average

The unemployment rate in the Monterey County was 20.2 percent in April 2020, up from a revised 12.2 percent in March 2020, and above the year-ago estimate of 7.1 percent. This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 16.1 percent for California and 14.4 percent for the nation during the same period.

"In some cases, depending on what their compensation was, they make more money with unemployment and the federal stipend of $600 a week."
